Construction programme opens doors to employment
A new employment and skills programme in construction, for Brent jobseekers over 19 years of age, has been launched by Wates Living Space and Brent Council.
The two week ‘Building Futures’ programme, which is based at Bridge Park Leisure Centre in Stonebridge, offers participants the chance to receive a BTEC level 1 Certificate in Construction, health and safety certificate, asbestos awareness certificate and a Traffic Marshal qualification.
Attendees will get the chance to visit an active construction site and receive training in key skills such as CV writing and interview techniques which will open routes for employment in the construction industry.
All graduates of the scheme will be offered six months support once the programme is complete to help them find sustainable employment.
Cllr Harbi Farah, Lead Member for Housing said: “This is a great opportunity to help local people find employment by giving them hands-on work experience in the construction industry, assisting them to gain qualifications and finding sustainable work once the programme is complete. We wish all the participants well as they build their future careers.”
David Morgan, Managing Director for Wates said: “Wates remains unwavering in our commitment to helping local Brent residents into work. On completion of the programme the candidates are well equipped for their next step on the career ladder, be it further training or employment, and it is our aim to facilitate such opportunities either with Wates or one of our supply chain partners. Since the programme’s inception in 2006, we have seen over 1,150 candidates complete the programme and more than 50 per cent have moved into employment or further training.”
The Building Futures programme is managed in partnership with Ixion Holdings, a subsidiary of The Shaw Trust, and supported by Wates Giving.
